The cream of the crop of the ‘slightly older’ bowlers in NSW will showcase their skills in the 2019 Senior Inter-Zone Sides Championship which will be held at Charlestown & Kahibah Bowling Clubs in Newcastle from 14-16 May 2019.
The Senior Inter-Zone Sides Championship has become known as one of the premier events on the NSW lawn bowls calendar. The players on show are aged 60 years or over and display not only the finest of skills and greatest sportsmanship, but also a sheer joy in being involved and representing their local Zone Association.
Each of the 16 Zones throughout NSW are represented by 12 players. With each side having Managers, Coaches and Reserve players, well over 200 people directly involved with the game are in town. With friends family and interested spectators swelling this number of people at the venue gives a great atmosphere (and a great economic benefit to the local economy).
The first stage of competition is in four pools of four sides. Play gets under way on Tuesday (14 May) with the opening two pool matches, followed by the final pool match on Wednesday (15 May) morning and the quarter finals on Wednesday afternoon. Thursday’s play is all at Charlestown Bowling Club with the semi-finals and final.
Section 1 at Charlestown features the sides from Far North Coast, Sydney Central and Southern, Manning and Sydney Northern. Section 2, also at Charlestown contains defending Champions Central Coast, South Eastern NSW, 2018 Runners Up Sydney South Western and Greater Western Sydney.
Sections 3 at Kahibah group North Eastern NSW, Illawarra, Hunter and Host Zone representative Newcastle in Section 3. Section 4, also at Kahibah, has North Coast, South Western NSW, Sydney North Western and Mid Western NSW competing.
While players are proud to be out representing their Zone, they also have another prize available to them. The series acts a selection trial for the NSW State Senior Side. Following the Senior Inter-Zone Sides Championship a NSW State Senior Squad to trial for selection in the NSW Senior State Side that will compete in the Australian Senior Sides Championship in October.
