Engadine’s Mason Lewis has claimed his second NSW Under 25 Singles Championship, claiming victory over Dylan Riley of Club Maitland City in a thrilling final at Cabramatta Bowling Club.
Lewis claimed the 2015 NSW under 25 Singles Championship while playing for Merrylands. Lewis now plays for the Engadine Cougars and has had a stellar 2018, gaining selection in the Keno NSW Blue State Side and being Runner-Up in the NSW State Singles.
Lewis gained a narrow lead in the opening ends before Riley fought back to level the scores at 10-10 before claiming the lead 12-10. The Maitland City Hunter was on the verge of a decisive result, holding a full count before Lewis played a superb running shot to trail the jack. The conversion swung the full count in Lewis’ favour propelling him to a 14-12 lead.
Riley again fought his way back to the lead claiming 5 singles to a double to lead 17-16 before a superb end by Lewis saw the Cougar claim another full count and a 20-17 lead.
Riley claimed a double on the next end to trail by one shot.
On the final end, Riley held two good shots to have a match winning lie, but Lewis again produced the conversion shot. With the jack at the T, running shot saw Lewis propel the jack out of bounds and clear the two shots out so that the re-spot saw Lewis gain the shot he required to claim the championship.
Riley, Runner Up in the 2017 Champion of Club Champions Singles, had a cracking battle in the start of his semi-final with Jai Whelan (Port City). Whelan set the early running, winning the opening three ends to lead 3-0 before Riley scored consecutive counts of 3 to lead 6-0. Whelan countered scoring 2 on each of the next 2 ends to lead 7-0. From that point Riley took complete control, scoring 15 unanswered shots to power to a 21-7 victory.
Lewis was similarly devastating in his semi-final. He did not lose consecutive ends, keeping control to beat Jessica Hogan, the only female in the final 8, 21-9.
Lewis took control of his quarter final clash with Mitch McDonnell (Halekulani) winning 11 of the opening 13 ends to lead 19-5. McDonnell then fought his way back into the running with a run of 5 winning ends to reach 15 before Lewis claimed the 2 shots required to win 21-15.
Riley progressed to semi-finals after a hard fought victory over James Robinson (West Dubbo) Riley claimed a slight advantage early, Robinson kept in touch and levelled the scores at 12-12 before Riley grabbed a four and two singles to lead 18-12. Robinson scored a single and triples to reach 16 before Riley closed out the game 21-16 with a count of 3.
